rainbowphotoWe aren’t huge fans of games, but this one has a “teachable moment” and a true reward for one lucky winner.

The rules are simple and the prize is flexible.

Let’s start with the prize: it’s a free license to OSP International’s PDU Podcast or the PMP Prepcast – excellent downloadable media products that help you keep your PMP Credential if you already have it, or earn it if you don’t yet have it.  The winner would be saving somewhere between $100 and $200!

Now let’s get to the rules.

As usual, we want each post – even a game – to be educational.  So with this post we expose one of the ideas from our book – the ‘green spectrum’ -  and ask you to comment on this post with a reaction that tells us:

  • where you think your current project fits on this spectrum (choose one of the four points below)
  • why you think it’s where it is (just a sentence or two)

greenrainbowHere you see a figure from our book, Green Project Management.  You’ll need to read the book for the juicy details.  Here’s a summary: we describe a spectrum of projects – from those that are “Green by Definition”, because the projects themselves have a deliverable related directly to sustainability – such as the turn up of a wind farm – to those projects which may not have any obvious connection to sustainability, like a new software release.  In the text, we describe the PM’s role in each of these four points along the spectrum.

We’re interested to know where you and your project sit on this spectrum.

Respond by answering the two questions above with a comment below, we’ll draw a winner by the end of September.

shamrock7tmQuick: no thinking on this one – what color do you associate with St. Patrick’s Day?

Hopefully you said green.  You did say green, right?

Given that confluence of color and holiday, here at EarthPM we’re taking the opportunity to announce something brand-new and exciting related to Green Project Management, and we’ve chosen t’ do it on the eve of March 17th – St. Patrick’s day, or in Gaelic, Lá Fhéile Pádraig.

That “something” is The Shamrock 7 – a (soon-to-be-prestigious) recognition award for the 7 most influential people in green project management.  It will honor the top 7 (with no ranking amongst the seven) people from around the world for their contributions and importance to this nascent field.

The details are still forming, but we know the intent and basic criteria for the award.

Nominations will be accepted after July when detailed criteria are available.

Judging will be done by a panel here at EarthPM, and the winners will be featured on our site, and will receive a complimentary one-year advertisement on our sponsor page, which they could use to promote their business or a charitable cause of their choice.

Stay tuned for details.  We’ll have more for you between now and July when nominations are due, and we’ll be using social media such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook to get the word out.  Between now and then, be thinking of who you think should be considered.  Who do you think to be influential in the greening of project management?  It could be someone involved as the PM of a clean tech project, or a project manager who has become somewhat of a thought leader in environmentally conscious PM…. the field is relatively open – although we do want the person to be a professional in the discipline of project management.

So be on the lookout for leprechauns and more announcements about this award.  And happy St. Patrick’s Day to ye!

greenin3 Duke University, based in Durham, NC, in the United States, is known to many for its basketball team, but it’s also a respected academic institution with 13,000 students and a significant research program.  One aspect of their research is led by the dean of Duke’s Nicholas School of the Enviornment, Bill Chameides.  Bill has his own excellent blog – probably worth bookmarking if you’re interested in the science of the environment.

In any case, although this is all about science and carbon and PCBs and equations at an academic level, there’s more to this than would be enjoyed only by the cast of The Big Bang Theory TVshow.  There’s also some fun to be had.  And it appears that Dean Chameides is a fun-loving guy.  That’s apparent in the video contest they’ve established.  EarthPM plans to produce an entry and we encourage as many project managers out there to take the challenge as well.  Think of it as a little project.

Yeah, yeah, blah blah, blah, so get to the $500 already!

Okay, okay…

The contest invites anyone to submit to the school aa 30-second (or less) video “telling us how you would make the environment better. Nothing is off the table: silly or serious, sizeable or small. Write your 3 words with cereal, scribble them on cards, draw them in the sky. Shoot them with your camera, cell phone, or web cam”.

Here is the information on how to enter the contest:

3 Steps to $500

Step: 1
Register on YouTube and upload
your video here >

Step: 2
Fill out the video submission form here >

Step: 3
Add your video to the Green in 3 group
(details and instructions will be provided
after you submit the entry form)

Good luck.  Expect to see an entry from EarthPM and we expect to see the Project Management discipline well-represented….RIGHT?
